Most debaters are taught what to argue, not how to argue. Most debaters can make arguments, but can’t convince a judge. What I’ve learned throughout my career as a debater is that winning in debate isn’t just about being right and structuring a disadvantage properly; it’s about making the judge care enough to want to vote for you. It’s about leveraging the talents God gave you to speak truth on stage at the podium or from a table in a broom closet. I want to help you get there.
My name is Malachi Smith, and I’m the 2024-2025 Team Policy Speaker Champion and the 2025-2026 Team Policy Debate Champion. In my first year of debate in Lincoln-Douglas, I knocked multiple high-ranking debaters out of nationals to finish 12th overall as a thirteen-year-old. In the next three years as a Team Policy debater, my partner and I checked at every tournament, had a winning record at every tournament, and placed in the top ten at all but one tournament we attended. I finished my career with first-place wins in Mars Hill, Original Oratory, Extemporaneous, and Parliamentary debate under my belt. I want to help you do the same or better.
For three years, my partner and I fought for our goal to win Nationals, and we did. But we didn’t do it alone. So many speakers and debaters have the drive and ability to win; they just need someone to help them get there. That’s where I come in. It was a couple weeks before NITOC, and as a 2NC and 2AC, I was struggling to have good impact calculus. Sometimes, my 2AC's and 2AR's were really struggling because I was lacking the ability to impact it well to the judge. Along comes Malachi. He gave me a talk at one of the tournaments we were both at, and demonstrated how to have stellar impact calculus. After that talk he gave to me, my impact calculus improved. Malachi is an awesome friend and mentor to me, and is an amazing coach. I can't recommend him highly enough.
