About Nathan
Nathan joined NCFCA in 2020 and competed in TP, LD, and Moot Court. He won Regionals back to back to back during his first three years in the league and recently won the 2024 National Championship in Team Policy. During the 2022-2023 debate season, Nathan won the two largest LD tournaments undefeated across more than 100 competitors in each tournament. Over his debate career, he has made 20 finals appearances. In Team Policy's 2023-2024 debate season, Nathan's affirmative case never lost an out round. In Moot Court, Nathan and his partner had the most dominant regular season in NCFCA history, making finals at every qualifier.
Coaching Philosophy
Nathan’s coaching is results-driven. He’s helped first year students go from even records to qualifying for Nationals, break at their very first tournament, win tournaments, and make finals appearances across multiple formats. His students consistently grow—not just in delivery and speaking mechanics, but in how they think. His method is built on the belief that clarity precedes persuasion. He teaches students to understand arguments deeply before delivering them persuasively. He tailors his approach to each debater’s natural communication style, helping them develop techniques that feel authentic—because the most convincing debaters are the ones who are confident in their own voice. Nathan specializes in cross-examination, effective narrative control, and argument generation. He charges $50/hr with a 20% discount for Nile subscribers. This was my second year doing NCFCA and until I started Nathan Chen coaching I had never broken. At the end of this year competing in LD I went 3-3 with a breaking round at Nationals. Along with breaking in Moot with a 5-1 record.
The success I found this year would have never been possible without the amazing Nathan Chen coaching experience. Nathan was always willing to help with our cases, ideas, and delivery for Moot. He would judge practice rounds and give us detailed pointers on how to improve. Each point tailored to me and my partners separate styles.
However, all the help he gave is not what truly makes Nathan Chen coaching the best choice. It is the fact that Nathan is able to adapt to every new student and help them find their style.
Nathan does not teach his students in a way so that they just know the answers. Instead every student gets a unique experience, where Nathan works to help the student find their style. He gives his students a foundation in which they can always build off of. For many years to come.
Nathan's is something that doesn't end when the year is over. Instead the skills he teaches allows for you to become a good debater that can stand the test of time.
There is also the fact that Nathan has a 100% success rate in his students breaking. Anything he coached them in they broke. You will be unable to find a Nathan Chen student that has not found success and that is something that just about no other coach can say.
The decision to get Nathan's coaching this year was one that helped me immensely. There is nothing else that I could recommend more for rapid improvement. All you have to do is sit down and he will mold you into the debater you have always wanted to be.
Mr. Nathan Chen has coached me in nearly every Speech and Debate category. He has mentored me into delivering national-qualifying speeches and helped me place 8th in Lincoln-Douglas at Nationals and 3rd and 4th in two Moot Court tournaments.
This was my first year competing in Moot Court, and my partner and I were completely lost at the beginning. Mr. Chen didn’t just help us compete and win, he truly taught us how to understand what it means to be a moot court debater.
It was also my first year in Lincoln-Douglas, and after coaching with Nathan, I won the very first tournament, going 5-1 and nearly sweeping finals. Without Nathan, I never would have come close to the success I found this year.
If I needed help with a specific case or point, Nathan was there. If I wanted teaching on how to do cross-examination more effectively, Nathan was there. If I needed help becoming less aggressive as a speaker, Nathan was there. He was always ready to talk through any debate questions I had and consistently provided helpful insights.
He truly listened to what I had to say and helped me work through my problems. One of the biggest things he always emphasized was that his goal wasn’t to create debate clones who could just recite what he said. His goal was to coach debaters who understood and believed in their arguments. He always coached me toward my unique style of debating.
He never took a one-size-fits-all approach—instead, he tailored all his teaching to fit the unique style of my partner and me.
As a fifth year varsity who has found success before, I was a little weary about accepting coaching. But Nathan's coaching was one of my best decisions I have ever made in terms of my speech and debate career.
Nathan has coached me in a variety of styles of debate. My partner and I competed in Moot Court for the first time this year. I had no idea what I was doing or where to begin. Nathan was instrumental in helping me understand the style of debate and how to prepare. One of Nathan's best coaching techniques is that he doesn't just help you, he helps you help yourself. Nathan has equipped me with the skills and tricks to generate my own ideas and arguments and have a deeper understanding of topics instead of spoon-feeding ideas. My partner and I were able to break multiple times, placed in the top four twice and placed in top three for Oral Advocate all due to his guidance. He always had time to review my cases and ideas and help when I had questions.
Nathan has a treasure trove of experience that will leave you a better debater, speaker and thinker. I was hesitant to accept coaching at first, but I have never regretted it since. If you're looking to up your game, break a losing streak, or improve your skills I would highly recommend.
